notes

These are notes from an ongoing inquiry into how people and technology relate to each other — and into what design can do when that relationship is still being formed.

They are not finished positions.
They are thinking made visible, offered in the spirit in which the rest of this site is offered: as an open invitation to the conversation.

We are in a period when the relationship between people and technology is still being shaped — by AI, by connected systems, by platforms that are becoming participants in daily life before anyone has asked what kind of participants they should be.

Social Imagination as Design Energy

The question is not whether things are connected.

They are. Everything is becoming connected — vehicles, healthcare systems, home environments, public infrastructure, the AI systems threading through all of it. The connectivity is happening regardless.

The question is what these systems talk about when they talk to each other. And to us.

Whether they talk about tasks, or about situations.

Whether they talk about commands, or about intentions.

Whether they attend to the transaction, or to the relationship.

Social imagination is the capacity to shift from one perspective to another, awareness of the relationship between experience and values of the wider society.

Social imagination in design is the practice of deciding this deliberately — of asking, before the interaction model is built, what values should organize it. What the system should notice. What it should do with what it notices.

Objects can act as instigators of social values. Not by displaying those values on a screen but by embodying them in behavior. A bicycle bell instead of a horn is civility made audible. A light that comes on for a stranger is care made tangible. A glow sent between people during illness is attention made present.

These are design decisions. They are also ethical ones.

Social imagination makes that visible — before the pattern solidifies, while there is still something to decide.
